SEWING TIPS

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

CUT 1: Body Fabric: 17.5” x 15.5” (44 cm x 39.5 cm)
CUT 2: 4” Wide Lace measuring 17.5” (44.5 cm)
CUT 1: 5.5” x 4” Embroidered cotton patch (approximate size)

FINISHED SIZE: 8” X 15” ( 21.5 cm x 38.5 cm)

FOR PILLOW FORM:

Muslin or other fabric of your choice
Polyester or cotton stuffing
Cotton thread
Scissors
Pins
Pellon 807 Wonder Web

Step 1: Attach the patch to the front of the pillow as shown in diagram. Patch can be sewn in place using a buttonhole stitch, straight stitch or zig zag. Another option is to attach it with a straight machine stitch very close to the edges, and then add decorative hand embroidery, running stitch or buttonhole stitch.

Alternative 1: A small amount of glue such as Roxanne’s Glue Baste It may also be used to affix your patch. Use it sparingly, and it will not show. through on the front of the patch.

Alternative 2: Pellon 807 Wonder-Web is a very thin, soft fusible web used for applique. This can be cut into thin strips (1/2” wide is good) and placed underneath the outer edges of the patch. I do not suggest using more than very thin strips when using this method. Unless you know what you are doing, ironing of any embroidery can be tricky. Polyester thread will melt under a very hot iron so do be careful to only iron around the very edges of the patch.

Alternative 3: Least desired method) Pin patch in place, then sew with a straight stitch or ziz zag. Take care not to let the edges pucker as you sew. Sometimes this cannot be helped, so fusing with Pellon 807 Wonder-Web or using a product such as Roxanne’s Glue Baste it are the preferable methods.

Step 2: Turn the side edges of the pillow over twice and sew with a straight stitch. With right side up, lay the two pieces of lace along the side edges of the pillow. Attach each piece of lace with a straight stitch as shown in the pictures.

Step 3: With right sides together, fold the fabric in half as shown in the pictures. Sew across the bottom seam to create a tube with lace at the left and right sides. Turn right side out and you are done!

Pillow form: Cut your pillow form to the appropriate size. You want this pillow form to be smaller in width than the pillow case. For instance, since the finished pillowcase will measure 8” tall by 16” wide, use these dimensions for the pillow form:

CUT 2: 18” x 12.5”

Sew the pillow form as indicated in the photos. Fill with the stuffing of your choice. The opening can be machine or hand-stitched closed.
